PONO is a high-end jewelry company, but one that aims to stay grounded on planet Earth.  This NY-based accessories company is designed and founded by Joan Goodman.

PONO accessories vary drastically between a $20 Masaai beaded bracelet (with 20% of the profits going to young African women in need) and, well, stuff that would be far out of my price range. So I asked, "Why?"

PONO unlike most accessory companies, has chosen to have their items manufactured in an Italian factory. Before PONO was created in 2003, Joan Goodman was (and still is) President of Bobbi Trim, a button company that creates buttons for such companies as Talbots, Anna Sui, and Jones Apparel. Joan has long been inspired by the progressive nature of Italian factories. Italian factories are notorious for following some of the strictest environmental and labor laws. In a sense, PONO has chosen idealism and quality over cheapness; the result being that their items cost more to create than many other companies. To remedy the variation in prices, PONO created many items under $85 retail so that everyone has the opportunity to wear PONO.  In addition, PONO uses many different and unusual materials, like wood, cow horn and luscious resins that the Italian factories use is a major selling point for them.

PONO website will be receiving an overhaul in the near future.
