Powerful earthquake hits Caribbean

An earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale occurred off the coast of the Caribbean island of Martinique but has not caused a tsunami, the US Geological Survey reported Thursday. The USGS said the quake occurred too deep under ground to generate a tsunami.

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck at 2 p.m. EST, the shaking lasted for about 20 seconds. The temblor was felt hundreds of miles away in Puerto Rico to the west, and Venezuela and Suriname to the south.
