St.Lucian MODEL: Mala Bryan

Since starting 'The Sweet 7' blog, I never anticipated discovering so much about my lil' island of St.Lucia and its people. So when a friend emailed me about another young St.Lucian, I was thrilled. Both of us were, mesmerized by her beauty, reminiscent of Naomi Campbell. Even harder not to notice those never ending legs. So I started to 'GOOGLE' her name.

This former student of the Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School, Mala Bryan, was discovered in October 2000 in St. Martin while shopping. A store had just opened and there was a casting session for potential models to represent the island at a competition in Paris. From the time she walked in the store, she was encouraged to partcipate, and soon enough was being measured and asked questions about her availabilty to fly to Paris. Sounds like a fairy tale, doesn't it? Well, by December 2000, Mala Bryan was strutting down a runway at the Moulin Rouge.

Mala Bryan has worked with various designers: Runway: Fendi, La Perla, Just Cavalli, Tommy Hilfiger. Saks 5th Ave, Serena Williams, Nike, etc. Catalog: Macy's West, Macy's Richies, Macy's Burdines, Sears, Hechts, Filenes. Editorials: Source, Yes! (Holland), Loaded (London), German Max(Germany) Suede, Essence, Esquire, Tropical (St.Barths)

She has shot also for Marie Claire Magazine, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Fairlady all the way in Cape Town, South Africa, she has done a photo shoot for Brazilian VOGUE, thirteen shows for the Cape Town Fashion Week and Jo'burg Fashion Week in Johannesburg. She also shot a commercial for a German coffee, Jacobs Coffee) at a Game Reserve in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, (and was then the face of that coffee. In the September 2008 collector's edition of Essence Magazine, Mala had a six page spread. This issue has "The Obamas" on the cover. ESSENCE became the only Black publication allowed a glimpse into the Obamas’ spacious Chicago home. Another Caribbean starlette, Barbadian pop singer, Rihanna also graces the pages in this issue. Amidst all her recent accomplishments, yet, Mala Bryan has not lost her humility. She admits, " I am very shy so only my friends know about all I have done."
