St.Lucia Carnival 2009: Band Updates

Fantasy Carnival Band has 2 Frontline Sections, and now I see why Sweet 7 readers, Professor and K are super excited. I've finally seen one of Fantasy's FL (frontline) sections, 'Secrets of the Rainforest.' So Red Unlimited is not the only band introducing wire bras and frontline sections this carnival. Regular costumes cost $495 - $550. Sign up as a group and get great discounts! Five ladies signing up together will receive a girlfriends package of $75 off each of their costumes. We also have a buddy package, three guys who sign up together get $75 off their costumes.

Last Carnival, Saucee of Trinidad Carnival Diary noticed that a then Red Int'l had a blue section 'BreathTaking' which was a Ronnie & Caro costume from Trinidad Carnival that very year. When Saucee blogged about it Red later scrapped that blue section.  Soon enough, I discovered 'The Truth About Other Countries Importing Costumes from Trinidad.'

On May 3, Red's costumes were leaked online before tonight's official launch. Saucee is noting once again that the much talked about wire-bra (white) section in Red Unlimited this year is very similar to Spice Carnival band's 2009 section 'Sea Salt.'

Saucee is still waiting for word back from someone from Spice re: Sea Salt. She also informed me that another St.Lucian band always uses costumes from Pulse 8. Hmm. I am not familiar with Pulse 8 costumes, are you? If so, then which Lucian band uses Pulse 8 costumes?

Saucee then posed this question to me, "Do you mind playing in a costume that you have seen for Trinidad Carnival?"  So I'll ask you the same, "Do you mind?"

Don't forget Red Unlimited officially launches at 10:30PM. WATCH LIVE HERE.

  2. those were the first words out my mouth when i saw those costumes!! I said that's Spice costume... Ny we did have a convo about that and I shared my disgust about the importation of costumes!! Lucians designers need to step up and show some real talent and stop using costumes I've seen in TT a few mths prior!! Pure laziness

  3. Yes, it is similar and we are not stealing Trinidad costumes. The bands sell us the costumes.

Your argument was that you did not want us to get like Trini. But St.Lucia carnival can never compete with Trinidad, on any kind of level.

I really won't bother about 1 or 2 costumes that are from Trinidad when there are so many other aspects of OUR carnival to be improved.

As for local designers ... name at least one who is edgy, youthful, hip. I can't! Until then, I'm very happy with costumes from Trinidad. If it means switching things around .. colours, headpieces, etc etc. I'm all for it. I really don't want a carbon copy of a Trini costume.

... And to be honest, St.Lucian revelers generally are very simple revelers. Except for the Red revelers who seem to be die-hard revelers, who appreciate the sexy bikini, beads and feathers from Trinidad. It even looks like Fantasy and Toxik revelers will follow that trend too.

The St.Lucian artisan bands are Rituals, Spirit, Mosaic HD and XSEnergy.

...And as much as I'm playing with J4F, we need to step up our game!

Again, like I said .. not all bands are the same. Each band has its own persona and their revelers.

  4. Also ... I ended when we last spoke by saying, if you don't want to jump in a band with costumes from Trinidad ... you can jump in a band that does not import costumes!

Now a days we have plenty options!

  5. i also see a cardamon look ah like from spice aswell, coming from red international//mas fever, i think it is.

  6. I agreed with you 100% on the jumping with another band!!! I just think its a bit embarassing with us celebrating carnival so so many yrs and still haven't stepped up to the plate!!!! And if they really need to import , can't it not be so blatantly obvious , the necklace evrything is so similar... yes cardamon also from Spice looks similar ...

But like someone told me noone in lucia really cares where their costumes comes from!! so maybe I have different feelings b/c I read those blogs and don't appreciate my island be blasted each yr about the lack of creativity and just the need to import!!

there are the revellers who live for the bling, beads , feathers and all that lavish stuff , I'm personally the simple chick but even within that simplicity I would like the band to come with the best they can - security , music, drinks, organized, friendly...

  7. OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY HERE WE GO AGAIN WITH THE IMPORTATION DEBATE LOL.
I TOO RECOGNIZED THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN ABOUT 3 OF REDS COSTUMES THIS YR & COSTUMES FROM OUT OF SPICE, THAT 1 COSTUMES FROM RED LAST YR & PULSE 8'S SPICY WASABI IN TOXIK THIS YR. BUT WHILE I SEE TOXIK'S COSTUME AS AN EXACT DUPLICATE @ LEAST RED'S STUFF LOOK MORE INSPIRED BY AS OPPOSED TO EXACT REPLICAS & IT'S NOT SO BAD IN MY OPINION TO DRAW INSPIRATION FROM OTHER DESIGNS, SWITCH IT UP A BIT, COLOR CHANGES ETC AS OPPOSED TO TOXIK'S BLATANT IMPORT. I THINK IT'S FAIR TO SAY THAT RED EITHER GOT THEIR MATERIALS OR COSTUMES DIRECTLY FROM SPICE OR THEY'VE CONTRACTED A SPICE DESIGNER TO DO WORK FOR THEM. 1 OF THEIR HEADPIECES LOOKS INSPIRED BY A IP MAS HEADPIECE AS WELL BTW BUT AGAIN INSPIRED BY NOT A BLATANT COPY.
I THINK JUST AS THE DEBATE OVER BANDS IN TRINIDAD SENDING THEIR STUFF TO BE MASS PRODUCED IN COUNTRIES LIKE CHINA & INDIA SO TOO WILL THE DEBATE IN OTHER CARNIVALS OVER THE DRAWING OF INSPIRATION OR COPYING ETC OF TRINIDAD COSTUMES IN THEIR RESPECTIVE CARNIVALS CONTINUE. TRUTH IS TRINIDAD IS THE MECCA OF CARNIVAL & EVERYONE ELSE WILL TRY TO DRAW FROM THEIR SUCCESSES & HITS. MYST ANTIGUA FOR 2 YRS NOW HAVE BEEN BLATANTLY IP MAS & PERSONS COMPLAINED THEN & AGAIN THIS YR. I THINK 1 OF THE MAJOR ISSUES IS TRINIDAD REVELERS BELIEVING THAT THE HIGH PRICES OF THEIR COSTUMES BEING AS A RESULT OF THEIR BAND NEEDING THE SUBSIDIZE THE ADDITIONAL COSTUMES TO SELL OFF TO OTHER CARNIVALS & THE BAND LEADER RESPONSE IN SAUCY'S PIECE "THE TRUTH ABOUT OTHER COUNTRIES IMPORTING COSTUMES FROM TRINIDAD" ADDRESSED THAT ISSUE & IN ESSENCE SAID THAT BANDS IMPORTING COSTUMES TO FOREIGN CARNIVALS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE RIDICULOUSLY EXORBITANT PRICES OF TRINIDADIAN COSTUMES.
THE OTHER MAJOR ISSUE IS THAT OF CREATIVITY OF LOCAL BANDS. I WOULD CONCUR SLIGHT WITH THAT ARGUMENT IN THAT I THINK THERE MUST BE ENOUGH LOCAL DESIGNERS WHO CAN BE TASKED WITH @ LEAST PRODUCING THE PROTOTYPE/SAMPLE COSTUME DESIGN OR EVEN SKETCHING IT & THEN TAKING THAT DESIGN OVER TO GET MASS PRODUCED &/OR TWEAKED IF YOU MUST OVERSEAS. I HAVE NO QUALMS WITH COSTUMES BEING DONE OVERSEAS AS LONG AS YOUR DESIGNS ARE LOCAL. ON THE OTHER HAND ST LUCIA HAS ABOUT 10 BANDS WITH @ LEAST 5-8 SECTIONS EACH WHICH COMES OUT TO 50-80 COSTUME DESIGNS TOTAL THAT REVELERS GET TO CHOOSE FROM & IT ALMOST WARRANTS AN "ARE YOU KIDDING ME" RESPONSE THAT PERSONS ARE ALMOST IN AN OUTRAGE & SO MUCH ATTENTION IS BEING PAID TO ABOUT 5 DESIGNS OUT OF 50-80 DESIGNS.
SO NO I DON'T THINK IT THAT GREAT OF AN ISSUE THAT SOME BANDS GET THEIR COSTUMES FROM OTHER BANDS. IT'S LIKE SHOPPING FOR CARNIVAL BOOTS FOR EG, WOULD YOU BUY THE $500 MANOLO'S OR THE $50 PAYLESS EQUIVALENT. I'M SURE YOU DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT NOW DO YOU LOL I SEE YOU IN CHINA TOWN GETTING THOSE KNOCK OFF'S & ILLEGALLY DOWNLOADING MUSIC & MOVIES ON YOUR PC OR BUY FROM THE BOOTLEGGERS SO REMIND ME WHAT THE ISSUE IS AGAIN? BUT AGAIN I WILL SAY THOUGH THAT IF YOU'RE GONNA DRAW FROM THE TRINIDADIAN MODEL, DO AS THEY DO & TAP INTO YOUR LOCAL DESIGNERS & START OFF YOUR DESIGN PROCESS @ HOME, NO REASON THAT IT SHOULD START & END OVERSEAS. INVEST IN YOUR LOCAL DESIGNERS, SEND THEM OFF TO INTERN OVERSEAS SO THAT THEY MAY HONE IN THEIR TALENTS & DO THE TYPE OF JOB THAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR FROM FOREIGN DESIGNERS. HAVE THEM TRAVEL OFF TO WHEREVER THE SUPPLIES ARE MORE READILY AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE WHAT THEY'LL NEED ETC SO THEN IN TIME THE PROCESS CAN START & FINISH RIGHT HERE @ HOME.

  8. Well, Well, the Curse of being RED

If Saucy is going to comment on an issue she should make truthful representations. Sea Salt looks nothing like RED's costa el silver, get some Blinkers saucy.

The fact of the matter is that costumes can only look certain ways with the materials used. If you look within the bands in Trinidad you will find costumes that look similar, so why can't costumes in other countries look similar.

RED does not, I repeat does not purchase left over costumes from any band. in fact RED does not purchase costumes from any band.

RED has a designer, who is Trinidadian, who is given a Theme and provides sketches, which RED discusses and makes amendments where it is deemed necessary. once the costume is approved by RED, it is massed produced in Trinidad with a few items made in Saint Lucia, much in the same way Trinidad mass produces and imports costumes from China.

Saucy, Why are Trinidad bands importing costumes from China and not making them in Trinidad?

Be that as it may, when RED gets large enough, RED will look to Red China, given that Trinidad is not appreciative of the investment being made by RED in a "CSME" environment by employing Trinidadians with the Know how to produce costumes.

The situation with the costume last year was most unfortunate and RED thanks Sweet 7 for bring it to its attention as RED was not aware that it was not an original costume and came down on the designer for placing RED in an embarrassing position. if RED was interested in making use of USED COSTUMES it would not have scrapped the costume, given it was so beautiful.

So please do not hate and come experinece playing mass with
Revellers with Energy to Dazzle (RED)

  9. If Saucy is going to comment on an issue she should make truthful representations. Sea Salt looks nothing like RED's costa el silver, get some Blinkers saucy. When I saw that costume I IMMEDIATELY recognized the belt which is identical to Se Salt and the decorations on the bra (even though it is now a wire bra) even though the headpiece has been changed.

Upon seeing that I contacted members of Spice who confirmed that the Trinidadian designer who is working with RED, Alicia Balthazar came to them and was sold a Sea Salt Frontline costume on condition that it was modified. This is direct from the horse's mouth, ie the band leader.

It is not a question of the costume LOOKING similar but the fact that it was one of Spice's costumes from Trinidad Carnival modified for St Lucia.

  10. I know this post is old, but all I have to say is Trinidad gets a little over inspired by the Rio Carnival costumes. So if they want to say somebody is copying them, they should think twice before they attack. Chupses.
