St.Lucia Carnival 2009: Toxik Costumes

  1. RIGHT OFF THE BAT I WILL SAY THAT TOXIK'S TAG LINE "THE NEW CARNIVAL REVOLUTION" IS A LIL PERPLEXING CAUSE THERE'S NOTHING ALL THAT NEW OR REVOLUTIONARY BOUT BLATANT COSTUME IMPORTATION. I'M SURE WE ALL KNOW BY NOW THAT I'M REFERRING TO PULSE 8'S SPICY WASABI REINCARNATED AS TOXIK'S DE JAVU (THE GREEN 1) TURNS OUT THERE'S A PURPLE DE JAVU COSTUME AS WELL, NOT SURE WHY 2 DIFFERENT DESIGNS IN 2 DIFFERENT COLORS ARE GOING BY THE SAME NAME, NOTHING DE JAVU BOUT THAT. ALTHOUGH, HOWEVER, I THINK THE GREEN 1 IS APTLY NAMED CAUSE THERE'S DEFINITELY SOMETHING DE JAVU BOUT THAT COSTUME LOL. SINCE WE'RE ON THE TOPIC OF PULSE 8 IMPORTS I GUESS I MIGHT AS WELL MENTION THAT TOXIK'S DREAM WONDERER IS PULSE 8'S BUSH FIRE. AGAIN, NOTHING NEW OR REVOLUTIONARY. ON THE OTHER HAND, I MUST POINT OUT THAT I LIKE BOTH DE JAVU COSTUMES & BUSH FIRE, MY BAD, I MEAN DREAM WONDERER :)
NOT A BIG FAN OF THE 2 DIFFERENT HEAVENLY DREAMS COSTUMES. I THINK I'D LIKE IT MORE IF IT WERE JUST THE VERSION WITH THE PINK & WHITE HEADPIECE CAUSE THAT 1'S COOLER THAN THE VERSION WITH THE BLUE & WHITE HEADPIECE.
NIGHTMARES & WET DREAMS ARE 2 NICE COSTUMES AS WELL. BUT MAN OH MAN OH MAN DREAM CATCHER IS A MESS, BOTH DESIGN & COLOR SCHEME. IT SHOWS THAT THERE WAS NO THOUGHT INTO THE DESIGNS OF THE COSTUMES, THEY WERE PURCHASED & NAMES WERE ASSIGNED TO EACH PIECE CAUSE ANY DESIGNER DESIGNING A COSTUME TO BE SPECIFICALLY CALLED DREAM CATCHER WOULD INCORPORATE SPECIFIC DREAM CATCHER ELEMENTS IN THE DESIGN. IN MY OPINION AS DISTINCT AS DREAM CATCHERS ARE SOMEONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO LOOK @ A COSTUME CALLED DREAM CATCHER & BE ABLE TO SAY YES THIS COSTUME SAYS DREAM CATCHER & THAT TOXIK DREAM CATCHER COSTUME CERTAINLY DOESN'T SAY DREAM CATCHER.
ALL IN ALL A VERY VALIANT EFFORT. BESIDES 2 OF THE COSTUMES BEING PULSE 8 IMPORTS THE OTHERS, EXCEPT DREAM CATCHER LOL WERE PRETTY OK. NOT WOWED BY THEM PER SAY BUT I CERTAINLY DON'T HATE EM BY ANY MEANS EITHER. I'M NOT REALLY WOWED BY THE COMPLETE COLOR STORY EITHER, NOT REALLY VIBRANT. I ALSO SAW PICS FROM TOXIK'S LAUNCH & THE MAKEUP & BODY ART WAS JUST WAY TOO EXCESSIVE & RIDICULOUS, I KEPT THINKING WHY THE HELL ARE THE MODELS DRAWN ALL OVER LIKE THAT LOL IT WAS A MESS LOL.
I DO GIVE TOXIK PASSING MARKS THOUGH. THEY'VE STEPPED UP IN THEIR PORTRAYAL FROM LAST YR IN MY OPINION & IF THEY MAINTAIN THAT TREND THEN THAT COULD ONLY MEAN BETTER THINGS FOR THEM IN THE FUTURE. I WISH THEM THE BEST OF LUCK.

  5. YOU KNOW ACTUALLY I DIDN'T COMPLETELY MISS THAT PURPLE DE JAVU COSTUME LOOKING VERY FAMILIAR BUT I JUST COULDN'T PUT MY FINGER ON IT BUT I REMEMBER THINKING SOON AS I SAW IT THAT I'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE BUT IT WASN'T TILL YOU MENTIONED IT NICKY THAT I REMEMBERED IT.
SO THEY'VE RECYCLED A COSTUME THAT J4F RECYCLED FROM PULSE 8 TWO YRS AGO. NOW THERE'S A NEW REVOLUTION FOR YOU LOL.

  7. HMM YEAH RIGHT, I DOUBT THEY WILL. PERSONS ARE GONNA PLAY IN THESE SECTIONS REGARDLESS, THEY MAY EVEN BE THE 1ST TO SELL OUT.
I WAS SPEAKING WITH A FRIEND TODAY BOUT THIS WHOLE IMPORTATION/COPY ISSUE & I THINK IT'S REALLY GETTING OLD. WE WERE BOTH PRETTY MUCH FED UP WITH THE WHOLE THING. BOTTOM LINE I GUESS IS THAT THE BANDS SELLING HAVE NO ISSUE SELLING, THE BANDS BUYING HAVE NO ISSUE BUYING & THE REVELERS PLAYING HAVE NO ISSUE PLAYING LOL BUT MY BIGGEST ISSUE WITH THE WHOLE SITUATION IS THAT I SEE NO REASON WHY THE CREATIVE PROCESS CAN'T START LOCALLY. THE BANDS MEET AFTER EACH SEASON & HOWEVER THEY GO ABOUT IT A PORTRAYAL THEME IS CHOSEN FOR THE FOLLOWING YR. ONCE THAT'S DONE SECTION BREAK DOWNS COME INTO PLAY & @ THIS POINT I SEE NO REASON WHY WE CAN'T BE TAPPING INTO ST LUCIAN DESIGNERS TO COME UP WITH DESIGNS, EITHER SKETCHES OR ACTUAL PROTOTYPES THAT CAN THEN BE TAKEN WHEREVER TO BE TWEAKED IF NEEDS BE (IN THE CASE OF THE PROTOTYPES) & MADE (IN THE CASE OF BOTH THE SKETCHES &/OR PROTOTYPES). IS IT THAT THERE AREN'T ANY ST LUCIAN DESIGNERS WHO CAN PRODUCE THE TYPE OF COSTUMES THAT THE BANDS ARE LOOKING FOR? WHY IS IT THAT THE DESIGNERS OF THE MORE POPULAR BANDS IN ST LUCIA FOREIGN. THEY HAVE DESIGN COMMITTEES BUT ULTIMATELY THE CREATIVE PROCESS IS IN THE HANDS OF FOREIGNERS. I DON'T MIND COSTUMES BEING PRODUCED OUTSIDE ST LUCIA CAUSE I KNOW ALL THE MATERIALS AREN'T READILY AVAILABLE @ HOME & IT REALLY IS MORE COST EFFECTIVE TO HAVE STUFF DONE IN CHINA FOR EG BUT AGAIN LET THE BULK OF THE INITIAL CREATIVE PROCESS START @ HOME CAUSE WE'RE MORE THAN CAPABLE. THEN WE KNOW THE FINAL PRODUCT IS MORE OURS THAN ANYONE ELSES CAUSE WE DESIGNED IT. THEY MAY HAVE MADE IT OR UPDATED IT BUT IT'S ESSENTIALLY OURS. NOBODY CAN SAY WE COPIED THIS OR BORROWED THAT. TRENDS ARE TRENDS IN ALL GENRES & OF COURSE TRINIDAD CARNIVAL USUALLY SETS THE TRENDS FOR A GIVEN CARNIVAL YR SO A TREND MAY BE SIMILAR BUT WE CAN TAKE IT & MAKE IT OUR OWN & LOOK JUST AS SEXY IF NOT BETTER.

  8. Wow Professor you've been listening to my conversations!!! you said every last word that preach each day about importation and having local designers!!! But last night I had a serious revelation- We as St. lucians are not going to be as successful on the carnival front as others B/c #1 Revellers don't demand the best for their money #2 the bands don't care to incorporate the feedback that they receive yrly from revellers and outsiders #3 they just don't utilize the opportunities presented to them ( example using this blog to market themselves instead of viewing it as spying on your band)#4 using local talents- I'll keep repeating this there must be artistic ppl in slu , that can design and portray a band's idea beautifully!!

  9. I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ELLA. I THINK THERE'S A FALSE SENSE OF SUCCESS IN ST LUCIA, 1 THAT'S BASED OFF OF HOW OH SO GREAT OUR COSTUMES LOOK NOW BUT @ WHAT PRICE TO US AS A PEOPLE. MOST OF THE MORE POPULAR BANDS RELY HEAVILY IF NOT ENTIRELY ON A FOREIGN PRODUCT & THEIR REVELERS COULD CARE LESS THAT NO ST LUCIAN CREATIVITY WENT INTO THE DESIGN. THERE'S A MISCONCEPTION BY MANY PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD & NOT EXCLUDING ST LUCIA THAT ONCE IT'S FOREIGN IT MUST BE BETTER & WE ALL KNOW THAT'S NOT NECESSARILY THE CASE. I'M PRETTY SURE WE HAVE DESIGNERS WHO'RE MORE THAN CAPABLE OF DESIGNING THE QUALITY & LOOK THAT THESE BANDS DESIRE.
I'D LOVE TO KNOW WHAT THE POLICY ON FOREIGN DESIGNED COSTUMES ARE IN ST LUCIA. WHAT THE CRITERIA IS FOR QUALIFYING AS A COMPETITOR IN THE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES & IF THERE'S ANYONE CHARGED WITH MARSHALING/MONITORING THE ACTIVITIES OF BANDS. ASIDE FROM WHEN THE IMPORTS ARE BLATANTLY REUSED/RESTYLED/REDESIGNED COSTUMES FROM FOREIGN BANDS WE CAN ONLY SPECULATE AS TO WHETHER THE BANDS DON'T USE ST LUCIAN DESIGNERS SO THE ONUS WOULD BE ON THE BAND LEADERS TO CLEAR THE AIR ON THE MATTER & STOP HIDING BEHIND THE FACT THAT THE BULK OF THEIR REVELERS DON'T CARE & AS SUCH THEIR #S ARE SECURED. FORUMS SUCH AS THIS 1 IS PERFECT FOR THE LEADERS TO LET IT BE KNOWN HOW MUCH LOCAL INPUT GOES INTO THEIR FINAL DESIGNS OR WHETHER THEY JUST RELY ON FOREIGN DESIGNERS & SIGN OFF ON THE DESIGNS ONCE THEY GO TO COLLECT. BUT I THINK THERE'S AN ISSUE OF MISTRUST WHEN IT COMES TO THIS SITE CAUSE NYREE IS LOCAL & ESPECIALLY SINCE SHE'S MADE IT KNOWN THAT SHE'S A J4F REVELER. I GUESS THE OTHER BANDS FEEL LIKE THEY CAN'T TRUST TO DISCLOSE INFO TO HER & THAT'S UNFORTUNATE CAUSE NYREE COULDN'T BE MORE UNBIASED IN HER WRITING. EVERYONE GETS EQUAL COVERAGE & ALL I'VE SEEN HER REALLY TRYING TO DO IS SPREAD FACTUAL INFO TO HER READERS. I WISH MORE ST LUCIAN READERS IN ST LUCIA, THE BANDS & THE RELEVANT AUTHORITIES WOULD PAY CLOSER ATTENTION TO WHAT THE READERS ON HERE HAVE TO SAY & JOIN IN THE DISCOURSE FOR THE SAKE OF TRUE SUCCESS IN OUR PRODUCT BECAUSE I REALLY DON'T SEE IT AS A SUCCESS WHEN PERSONS TO COME TO OUR SHORES TO PLAY IN FOREIGN DESIGNED COSTUMES.
SOME MAY ASK WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DESIGNING THE COSTUMES LOCALLY THEN HAVING IT MADE OVERSEAS & JUST OUTRIGHTLY GETTING IT FROM OVERSEAS. MY ANSWER, WHEN NIKE DESIGNERS DESIGN A NEW PAIR OF JORDANS & SEND TO HAVE IT MADE IN CHINA WHOSE SNEAKER IS IT? IT'S NIKE CAUSE THEY DESIGNED IT.
SO TO ANY BAND LEADERS WHOSE BANDS USE FOREIGN DESIGNED OR IMPORTED COSTUMES READING THIS PLEASE CLEAR THE AIR:
WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS FROM PORTRAYAL THEME CONCEPTUALIZATION TO LAUNCHING?
HOW HEAVILY DO YOU RELY ON FOREIGN DESIGNS & DESIGNERS?
WHY AREN'T YOUR COSTUMES TOTALLY ST LUCIAN DESIGNED?
WHAT'S YOUR GENERAL TAKE ON THIS WHOLE FOREIGN DESIGNED & IMPORTED COSTUME ISSUE?
TO THE RELEVANT AUTHORITIES I WANNA ASK THIS:
WHAT QUALIFIES A BAND TO BE ELIGIBLE TO COMPETE IN THE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES IN THE BANDS COMPETITION?
HOW DO YOU MONITOR THE IMPORTATION & FOREIGN DESIGNING OF COSTUMES BY VARIOUS BANDS?
THE ARTISTES SHOULDN'T GO UNSCATHED EITHER:
WHY IS THERE SUCH A DELAY YR AFTER YR IN RELEASING MUSIC?
PLEASE, INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW. SOME ST LUCIANS DO CARE & SILENCE ISN'T ALWAYS THAT GOLDEN.

  10. Ella, I totally agree w/ you esp on #3. Im glad im not the only 1 who have a gripe on imported costumes. i'll play in them, but if i see a design thats justifiable and local, best believe im in that costume 1 time!

i was watching tyra and she always say if u cant excel in ur desired field, try something else that surrounds the field so u may eventually get to that desired field.

how many designers do we have in lucia thats prob fighting hard to get a break in the fashion industry??? i no shermarc designs, and i no he wants to be the next peter elias, etc. i think he and other potential lucian designers should start of by designing MODERN carnival costumes for the season, and show prototypes in adv. (like jan/feb) and if certain bands will give dem a chance, masqueraders will be intrigued, buy the costumes, and will want 2 no who designed/made the costumes. that alone will make potential designers illustrious and not only will bands profit from local designs, this will shocase the art that slu have to attract more foreigners and alas start that designers' career.

    just wondering.... :)

  11. Folks, RED hears you.

Carnival bands in Saint Lucia are too small to benefit from economies of scales and as such having costumes imported or in the case of RED, desinged and produced exclusively for RED (RED hopes)makes sense inorder to put the band on the Road.

Carnival bands in Saint Lucia are not profitable and mostly all including RED, year after year is in the Red, no punn intended. but RED aims to do it year after year to provide the ultimate reveller experience in Saint Lucia.

RED last year attempted to use a local designer, got very lovely designs, but could not afford them and further the costumes were still being produced in Trinidad at a price that RED Could not afford.

Compare the prices for Costumes in Trinidad with all the economies of Scales they have and the price of costumes in Saint Lucia, totally disproportionate. Yet revellers expect the all inclusive treatment which, by the way was copied by Trinidad, given Saint Lucia has always had all inclusive for carnival.

RED cannot be everything, RED cannot by the ultimate party band and yet be the curator of Saint Lucia's artistic or creative traditional mass.

Ever wonder why Saint Luciana play mass in Trinidad or Barbados and not Saint Lucia? Not because of Costumes but the experince of mass.

By the way Barbados is the largest importer of used or rather played costumes.

The fact remains Saint Lucia does not have enough designers for the number of bands we have and even if they are available it is simply not cost effective. Not that they are expensive, but if RED has to keep the prices down it makes business sense to engage the cheaper designer with the available access to the material, know how and builders.

RED came into being to provide the ultimate carnival experince and will continue to do so until revellers say we have had enough.

    Meanwhile, "R U RED?" I am.

  12. 1ST OFF I GREATLY APPRECIATE YOU TAKING THE TIME OUT TO ADDRESS OUR CONCERNS. I UNDERSTAND THE ECONOMICS OF MAS & I KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO BE AS COST EFFECT AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN YET @ THE SAME TIME NOT COMPROMISING THE QUALITY OF THE OVERALL PRODUCT THAT YOU PROVIDE. BUT IF YOU DON'T MIND, HOW MUCH WOULD A TYPICAL ST LUCIAN DESIGN COST AGAINST A TYPICAL TRINIDADIAN DESIGN?
BTW I DON'T THINK THE ARGUMENT WAS EVER MADE IN FAVOR OF THE "TRADITIONAL" MAS, NOTHING AGAINST IT BUT I THINK MOST OF NOT ALL OF THIS BLOGS FOLLOWERS ARE MORE PARTIAL TO THE "NOUVEAU" MAS. I KNOW THAT THE MORE COSKELLE THE DESIGN THE MORE EXPENSIVE IT MAY BE TO PRODUCE AS OPPOSED TO SOME OF THE SKIMPIER DESIGNS. BUT OUR ARGUMENT IS THAT SURELY THERE'RE ST LUCIAN DESIGNERS @ HOME OR ABROAD CAPABLE OF GIVING THAT SAME LOOK AS HAS COME TO BE EXPECTED FROM BANDS LIKE RED, J4F ET AL. CERTAINLY I EXPECT THAT THERE'S A PRICE POINT SET FOR YOUR PRODUCTION COST & THE DESIGNER JUST HAS TO BE INFORMED OF THAT PRICE FACTOR SO AS TO AVOID EXCEEDING IT OTHERWISE ONCE THE COSTUME IS RECEIVED IT HAS TO BE SCALED BACK TO MAKE I PROFITABLE FOR THE BAND. & BESIDES MOST OF THESE TRINIDADIAN DESIGNERS THEN HAVE TO GO THROUGH THEIR SUPPLIERS IN NY WHO THEN SENDS THEIR STUFF ON TO CHINA TO BE MADE. SO SURELY THAT MUST PILES ON THE COST DOESN'T IT?
THAT BEING SAID, AGAIN, WHAT'S THE PRICE DIFFERENCE THAT WE'RE TALKING HERE BETWEEN ST LUCIAN DESIGNS & FOREIGN?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hey professor it is quite a difference.

To be fair, I am aware that RED has explored only two designers at home. If there are designers overseas they perhaps need to come out of hiding and show their stuff to be considered.

I can say for Carnival 2010 RED is already in discussions with a local designer, who designed the Mangement's costumes for the Road last year with a view to design for RED.

You must remember that RED is a young entity with a formula that is working and departing from it when RED's feet is not solid on the ground is a major risk that a new entity does not take if it has a formula that is working so far.

RED is only five years and still learning. RED is not a break away band, RED started from scratch with members with no Carnival knoweldge save some of the members who were revellers.

If RED finds a Saint Lucian designer that can wow them, then why not, but RED will not be xenophobic and will work with anyone, anywhere in the world to bring out the BEST Band permitted by RED's limited resources.

    Mean while...We jumping in RED...

  14. THANKS FOR ADDRESSING MY QUESTIONS. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS THE TYPE OF DISCUSSIONS WE SHOULD BE SEEING MORE BETWEEN REVELERS & BAND MANAGEMENT SO THAT PERSONS ON THE OUTSIDE WHO CARE TO KNOW CAN GET ANSWERS TO SOME OF THEIR HOT BUTTON QUESTIONS. SO I HEAR YOU RED & I UNDERSTAND WHERE YOU'RE COMING FROM & WHAT YOU'RE SAYING. I ALSO READ YOUR RESPONSE TO SAUCY'S SEA SALT ISSUE & THAT OFFERED SOME MORE INSIGHT INTO YOUR WORKINGS. SO AGAIN I APPRECIATE YOU GUYS STEPPING TO THE FORE LIKE THIS & ADDRESSING THESE QUESTIONS. ALL THE BEST
